Utter is led by Co-Artistic Directors Gareth Nicholls and Joe Douglas, with Producer Sarah Gray.

Gareth Nicholls Bio:
Gareth trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has previously been Artist In Residence with Imagine and an Emerging Artist with the National Theatre of Scotland.

His directing work includes Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot by Oliver Emanuel (macrobert), Women of Troy by Euripides (ALRA), Welcome To Thebes by Moira Buffini (ALRA), Pause With A Smile (Winner of Arches Platform 18 Award 2011) Donald Robertson is Not A Stand-Up Comedian (Arches / NTS), Tin Forest South West (National Theatre of Scotland), Voices From The Black That I Am (Oran Mor / NTS), Educating Ronnie (Utter / Macrobert) and Under Milk Wood (Tron Theatre).

Joe Douglas Bio:
Joe Douglas is currently Associate Artistic Director at Dundee Rep. He is co-Director of Utter, alongside Gareth Nicholls. He trained in Directing at Rose Bruford College and was Trainee Director for the National Theatre of Scotland in 2007-8.

His directing credits include: The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui, Death of a Salesman, George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black Black Oil, The BFG (Dundee Rep), The Red Shed (Mark Thomas), Bloody Trams (Traverse/Utter), The Last Polar Bears, Our Teacher’s A Troll, Allotment (National Theatre of Scotland), My Friend Selma (Terra Incognita) and a number of productions for A Play, Pie and a Pint (Oran Mor, Glasgow). He co-directed Dear Scotland (National Theatre of Scotland), Letters Home (Grid Iron/Edinburgh International Book Festival), Dr Stirlingshire’s Discovery (Grid Iron/Lung Ha) and was Associate Director on three international tours of Black Watch (National Theatre of Scotland).

In 2012, as part of Utter, he wrote and performed Educating Ronnie (Macrobert/Utter/HighTide) at the Edinburgh Festival as part of the Made in Scotland Showcase and will direct Stand By by Adam McNamara in 2017.
